Practice Yoga Austin 7-9 PM

Every first Sunday at Practice Yoga, Community Yoga will be hosting a gather from 7-9 in support of yogis and community members actively engaged in service, community healing, and social change. We will spend an hour in practice together, followed by and hour of circling, group discussion, and or guest presentations around compassionate action in the Austin Community.

Giving Tuesday

#GivingTuesday is a special call to action to create a global day of giving that brings diverse organizations and communities around the world together to give back.

Now, more than ever, we need leaders. We need leaders in every space, place, and community. We need leaders to rise up, speak and hear truth, activate conversations, and facilitate embodied, compassionate, deeply authentic change. Community Yoga (CoY) serves to bridge yoga and social engagement through the practice of compassionate action: training and inspiring leaders to create sustainable change in their communities using the tools of yoga, meditation, and self-inquiry.

Our world needs leaders to promote wellness, and connection to all members of our community regardless of religion, race, political belief, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

In every community there is work to be done. In every nation, there are wounds to heal. In every heart there is the power to do it. -Marianne Williamson

Community Yoga Austin fosters and sustains a healthy, vibrant community by promoting personal and interpersonal well being. Rooted in compassion and connection, we are moved to wake up and take action in response, creating a peaceful, just, and connected global community.

This is where you come in….

Public engagement brings people together to address issues of importance, solve problems and bring about positive social change. For public engagement to be effective, it needs everyday folks to engage in discourse, dialogue and action on issues they really care about.

Through our Giving Tuesday we are highlighting members in our community engaged in what we call “The Yoga Of Compassionate Action” throughout the  month of December. Our intention is to start a dialog exploring the living practice of compassion and what that means to us individually and collectively. We emphasize the importance of self compassion, because we recognize that for peace to be sustainable it has to begin with inner peace. We invite you to help us bring people from vastly different backgrounds together to participate in meaningful dialogue, community building exercises.

Tuesday, November 29th through December 31st we will highlight folks engaged in collectively moving our world forward with compassion in an effort to inspire over 1080 acts of compassion throughout our campaign. In doing so, hope to create a ripple effect. We all have a deep need to be helpful. It’s how the soul gets its exercise. It strengthens your heart, and it can be incredibly impactful. Most people want to help out, but more than that, they cherish the opportunity. As one life heals, a ripple is created touching everything in its path making our community a happier, healthier, and safer place to live.

Share with us what is most alive in you. Where has your life been impacted by compassion in action? Where could we collectively benefit from applying a little more compassionate action in our own life?

Tag a friend or someone you would like to honor.  Add the hash tags below to your post. Invite them to share a few words about compassion as well. Gratitude is a form of consciousness and acknowledgement lifts up both the giver and the receiver.

So please remember this when YOU need help. When you want someone to talk it through with you (but they’re mostly listening). Community is the antidote.

2017 L.E.A.P 50 Hour Mindfulness Based Trauma Informed Yoga Teacher Training

Community Yoga and Sanctuary Yoga are joining arms to offer a truly unique 50 hour Mindfulness Based and Trauma Informed Teacher Training rooted in service and recognition that sustainable peace begins with in.

Embark on a transformational journey of self-inquiry, social justice education and creative exploration to uncover your true motivation for service that leads to embodied, effective and conscious action.

This opportunity is for all yoga teachers, yoga students, and anyone interested in learning about how we can make a real and lasting impact on the world around us.

The CoYA certification develops training  in facilitating mindfulness based, trauma informed, and population sensitive yoga classes in a variety of community settings. Through education, self-reflection, group discussion, and experiential learning, students will nurture the skill and awareness needed to teach a more therapeutic and psycho-educational style of yoga.

We honor the spirit of commUNITY and in doing so welcome this opportunity to inspire diverse populations to live in unity, serve compassionately and lead peacefully.

During this core 50 Hour training participants:

Learn effective facilitation and therapeutic presence.

Explore how to work in challenging environments in a healthy, just and sustainable way.

Community work experience, social service experience, and experience with specialized populations a plus. Because we will be training to work in non-traditional settings with specialized populations, our enrollment process will consist of both the enrollment form and a personal history. This training will demand a high level of self-reflection, diversity, social competence, and cultural competence.

Expect to share practices, assignments and homework to carry us through the course and beyond. The intensive nature of this offering is intended to initiate deeper levels of of realization, actualized healing, and embodied awareness.

To reserve a place in the training you must complete the online application by Jan 1, 2017. Enrollment is limited to 20 participants to ensure the intimacy and depth of the experience.  For those accepted, a $200 deposit will be required to reserve your spot. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS
unnamed-34 Shawn Kent MA, LPC, RYT is a licensed professional counselor, and a registered yoga instructor. Shawn has spent the last fourteen years researching and applying mindfulness to treatment for youth and adults. He spent six years as a counselor at Austin Child Guidance Center where he developed and facilitated mindfulness-based yoga therapy groups for incarcerated adolescents. Shawn is currently the clinical director and director of youth services at Community Yoga Austin, where he runs mindfulness-based yoga therapy groups in Austin high schools. He also teaches weekly mindfulness-based relapse prevention groups to teens in outpatient rehabilitation at Teen and Family Services.

yelling_webGenevieve Yellin is a Community Yoga Ambassador. She is a registered ERYT 500, Children’s Yoga Teacher (RCYT) and a Prenatal Yoga Teacher (RPYT); she is also a certified Professional Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT) through Integrative Yoga Therapy. Her professional background as an environmental research scientist (biochemistry) in the University system, before transitioning to full-time Yoga Therapy practice is evident in her approach to yoga therapy. Her teaching serves as an accessible bridge between the ancient teachings of Yoga and modern medical sciences. Genevieve is the Director of Sundara Yoga Therapy trainings in Austin, Texas, and is a Faculty member and mentor in the 300hr & 800hr Integrative Yoga Therapy C-IAYT certification programs worldwide. Genevieve is the Founder/Director of The Overcome Anxiety Project, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that amongst other initiatives, offers Trauma Informed Yoga training to those who serve underserved communities. Her Trauma Informed Yoga Therapy work is extensive, with a concentration in addiction/chemical dependency rehabilitation, chronic pain, cancer care, Alzheimer’s/Dementia, care-takers, pulmonary rehabilitation, and cardiac rehabilitation.

yogijax-22Jacquelyn has been sharing the practices of mindfulness and yoga to incarcerated and system-involved youth and adults since 2011. She is yoga teacher dedicated to individual transformation and embodied, compassionate social change. Her experience revolves around social movements, indigenous studies and the links between individual well-being and community building/social change. Through her work in marginalized communities she developed programs to support survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, initiatives to reform the incarceration addiction cycle, yoga/mindfulness based programs in juvenile detention centers and youth programs. In 2013 she began leading teacher training programs with an emphasis on trauma’s impact on the body-mind paired with experiential learning for yogis and inspiring leaders to create sustainable change in their personal lives and communities.  She utilizes a unique blend of yoga, mindfulness, energetics, SEL, leadership facilitation and cross-cultural connection with a model of inclusion, compassion and service to communities to support mobilization around a common intention of serving the whole.

Community Yoga Austin and Clean Cause present: Recover the Light, a special practice featuring four of our amazing CoYA ambassadors. At Waller Ballroom on Tuesday, January 12, please join us for an evening of community and mindful yoga that will highlight, celebrate and support the work that Community Yoga Austin is doing in the recovery communities of Central Texas and is working to expand.

Jenn Wooten, Gioconda Parker, Kiely Rutledge and Shanti Kelley will present a dedicated practice intended to inspire and illuminate.

Community Yoga Fest Benefitting Community Yoga Austin

Community Yoga Austin will present COMMUNITY YOGA FEST on Sunday, September 27, from 12pm to 6pm, at Fiesta Gardens. Teacher-led yoga classes, music, food, drinks – all in one place, all for the cause of community-building and uniting to bring about social change thru the practice of yoga. A family-friendly event, COMMUNITY YOGA FEST will feature classes led by some of Austin’s favorite yoga master-teachers: Ben Heath, Hilly Flora, Shanti Kelly, Leeah Broms, Gustavo Padron and Leah Cullis. Music by DJ Mel and others. Food trucks, food samples, kombucha, beer and Tito’s Vodka will all be on hand to round out a truly Austin yoga experience.

Mercury Rising in September

Mercury Rising

Mercury Hall Fundraiser supports PURE Action’s scientific research and community projects.

Tickets are now on sale for our first annual fundraiser yoga class September 9th at Mercury Hall. Class is from 7-9 pm. (Doors open at 6pm.) Tickets cost $40 per person and are available at any studio, or you can buy online at http://www.pureaction.org/donate.
